Day 4: LIMA - CUZCO - SACRED VALLEY (Breakfast)
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the mid-morning flight to Cuzco. Arrival and transfer to your hotel located in the Sacred valley. Accommodation at the Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba. Free day at leisure.
You may wish to embark on one of several free excursions within the grounds, an ecological farm, a trail walk at sunset, some bird-watching, or learn about the production of Chicha de Jora beverage.
Alternatively, you may just enjoy the ambience of the Sacred Valley, with complimentary teatime or for those wishing for something a little more indulgent, immerse yourself in the Mayu Spa ("River" in Quechua). With a rustic chic design inspired by traditional Andean architecture, Mayu Spa features relaxing views of the surroundings as it is found on a foothill in-between the organic orchard and an enchanting peppertree forest. With treatments based on 100% natural products derived from native medicinal herbs, the new wellness centre has a plunge pool, four private therapy rooms and a dry sauna.
Today you will embark on a half day visit to the Patacancha weaving community, a traditional Quechua community located about a one hour drive up a dirt road from the town of Ollantaytambo. This highland community has lived the same way for hundreds of years working the land and selling whatever agricultural products they don't use.
The community is known for its colourful high-quality textiles which are hand-woven primarily by the women in the community. If you want to really see how local communities in most parts of the Sacred Valley live, this is an authentic experience, off the beaten track.
The non-profit organisation Awamaki work with a local women's cooperative made up of 28 local women whom they have helped to train. The women greet you at the Awamaki weaving centre, share a little about their lives with a visit to their homes and take you through the entire weaving process. This includes the spinning of raw alpaca wool into yarn on the traditional spindle or 'phuska', dying the fibers with natural plant dyes, an explanation of the techniques and tools used to weave the yarn into cloth and at the end you learn to weave your own bracelet. These traditional Andean communities speak mainly Quechua, the local indigenous language with some basic Spanish so communication is unfortunately quite limited. Packed lunch will be provided. Return to your hotel.
Free afternoon before enjoying dinner at the Wayra ranch, complete with horse show.
After breakfast, embark on a gourmet cooking class at the Pakakuna Posada Gourmet restaurant. You will enjoy a visit to the market, not a tourist attraction market but an authentic food market before embarking on your cooking class at the restaurant.
Return to your hotel for a relaxing afternoon.
Today it will not be possible to avoid the crowds but with your private guide, you will be able to enjoy the highlights of the site in relative freedom. You will have an early start and enjoy breakfast before transfer to the station for your vistadome train to Aguas Calientes. The train will depart at 08.30am for the 1 1/2 hour journey. Arrive to Aguas Calientes train station, gateway to the lost city of the Incas. Take the short ride up to Machu Picchu which will meander through breathtaking mountain scenery up to the ancient Inca citadel. Shortly after, a guided tour of Machu Picchu, the most spectacular ancient city in the world. Built by the Inca Pachacutec, and comprising stone blocks fitted with masterful precision, Machu Picchu harmoniously blends into the mountain landscape. This fabulous city has houses, temples, warehouses, a large central square, all connected by narrow roads and steps, and is surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side. Return late afternoon train back to Cuzco. Arrival and transfer to the Aranwa Boutique hotel.
Day 8. CUZCO (Breakfast)Free morning. In the afternoon, enjoy a privately guided tour of the Inca sites on the outskirts of Cuzco including the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman overlooking Cuzco, Qenko, Tambomachay and Puka Pukara. Return to Cuzco before visiting the Cathedral and Qoricancha temple. The tour will be done in order to minimize mixing with large groups of tourists in the sites. Return to your hotel.
Day 9. CUZCO (Breakfast & dinner)
Free day at leisure. Explore this fascinating city on your own. Visit the many markets, local arts and crafts shops and immerse yourself in a city with over 3000 years of history.
Enjoy dinner at Map Café.
After breakfast, free morning before your afternoon return flight to Lima and connecting flight home.
End of our services.
